This calculator gives the tons of hot-mix asphalt for a driveway, parking lot, path or patch from the area and the compacted thickness, the same way state DOTs figure it: square yards × pounds per square yard per inch × inches ÷ 2,000. The planning weight is 110 lb per square yard per inch of compacted depth; when the plant gives you the mix design (JMF) density, type that number instead. Enter the length and width or the square footage, in feet and inches if you like. Waste is added only if you enter it, and metric tonnes are shown alongside.

110 lb per SY per inch is the usual planning number (range 108–120). Use your plant's mix-design figure when you have it. No waste unless you enter it.

Where the numbers come from
- Asphalt weight: 110 lb per SY per inch compacted (= 146.7 lb/ft³) — typical range 108–120"Constructing Quality Asphalt Pavements" checklist (2025 edition, Penn State / PA Asphalt Pavement Association): 108–120 lb/SY/in, depending on aggregate specific gravity, binder content and in-place density. Tennessee DOT (IB 16-16, https://www.tdot.tn.gov/PublicDocuments/DesignDivision/assistant_engineer_design/design/DGpdf/IB_16_16.pdf) uses the same method with 103–115 for dense mixes and 88 for open-graded friction course. Use the mix design (JMF) number when you have it.Source

The formula
Tons = square yards × lb per SY per inch × compacted inches ÷ 2,000 — the method state DOTs use. 110 lb/SY/in (146.7 lb/ft³) is the common planning figure.
Worked example
A 60' × 12' driveway at 2": 720 SF ÷ 9 = 80 SY × 110 × 2 = 17,600 lb = 8.8 tons.
Quick reference
Tons for common driveways at 110 lb per SY per inch
| Driveway | SY | 2" compacted | 3" compacted |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10' × 40' (400 SF) | 44.4 | 4.89 tons | 7.33 tons |
| 12' × 50' (600 SF) | 66.7 | 7.33 tons | 11.0 tons |
| 12' × 60' (720 SF) | 80.0 | 8.80 tons | 13.2 tons |
| 16' × 60' (960 SF) | 106.7 | 11.7 tons | 17.6 tons |
| 20' × 80' (1,600 SF) | 177.8 | 19.6 tons | 29.3 tons |
SY = SF ÷ 9; tons = SY × 110 × compacted inches ÷ 2,000. No waste included.
Common questions
How do I calculate asphalt tonnage?
Area in square yards × weight per square yard per inch × compacted inches ÷ 2,000. First SF ÷ 9 = SY. A 1,000 SF patch 2" thick at 110 lb: 1,000 ÷ 9 = 111.1 SY × 110 × 2 ÷ 2,000 = 12.2 tons. If you only have square feet, that is SF × 110 × inches ÷ 18,000 — the same thing with the ÷ 9 folded in.
How many square feet does a ton of asphalt cover?
At 110 lb per SY per inch, a ton is 2,000 ÷ 110 = 18.2 SY of asphalt 1" thick compacted, which is 164 SF. At 2" it covers 82 SF, at 3" 55 SF and at 4" 41 SF. Halve the thickness and the same ton goes twice as far.
How much asphalt do I need for a 12 × 60 driveway?
8.8 tons at 2" compacted: 12 × 60 = 720 SF ÷ 9 = 80 SY × 110 × 2 = 17,600 lb ÷ 2,000 = 8.8 tons. At 3" it is 13.2 tons. If the job is a base lift and a surface lift, figure each lift at its own thickness and add them — or run the calculator at the total compacted depth if both use the same mix.
How much does asphalt weigh per square yard per inch?
About 110 lb, which is 146.7 lb/ft³ compacted. The Pennsylvania "Constructing Quality Asphalt Pavements" checklist gives 108–120 lb per SY per inch depending on the aggregate's specific gravity, the binder content and the in-place density; Tennessee DOT uses 103–115 for dense mixes. A mix with heavy stone weighs more, so the JMF figure beats any default.
Do I use the loose or the compacted thickness?
Compacted — the finished depth after rolling. The 110 lb per SY per inch weight is for in-place, compacted asphalt, so measure the depth the finished pavement will have, not the loose lift the paver lays down. How much thicker to lay it before rolling is the paving crew's call, not a quantity you order.
Why does my supplier's number differ from mine?
Because they use the density of the actual mix (the job mix formula) instead of a planning figure, and may round up to whole tons or add a percentage for waste and handling. Type their lb per SY per inch and the calculator matches them. If they quote lb/ft³, multiply by 0.75 to get lb per SY per inch (1 SY × 1" is 0.75 ft³): 146.7 × 0.75 = 110.
