  1. Area
    A = L × W
    20' 0" × 10' 0" = 200.00 SF
  2. Volume
    V = A × depth
    200.00 SF × 4" = 2.47 CY
  3. Tons
    t = CY × 3300 lb ÷ 2,000
    2.47 CY × 3300 lb ÷ 2,000 = 4.07

Where the numbers come from

  • Weight of stone and sand: Crushed stone 2,590 loose / 3,300 compacted · sand 2,960 / 3,180 · trap rock 2,780 / 3,540 lb per CYMissouri DOT Highway Maintenance Tables and Conversion Factors, "Loose / Compacted Weights of Various Materials". Each material has a range by gradation; these are the top of each range so tons are not understated. Ask your supplier for their number and type it in under Adjust.Source
  • Topsoil, fill dirt, mulch: Sold by the CY — no standard weightPublished weights for soil and mulch vary too much with moisture and organic content (roughly 1,400 to over 3,500 lb per CY for soil) to pick one. Type your supplier's weight under Adjust if you need tons.
