  1. Percent grade
    rise ÷ run × 100
    1' 0" ÷ 12' 0" × 100 = 8.333%
  2. Ratio
    1 : (run ÷ rise)
    12' 0" ÷ 1' 0" = 12.00
  3. Angle
    atan(rise ÷ run)
    atan(0.08333) = 4.76
  4. Pitch
    rise ÷ run × 12
    0.08333 × 12 = 1.000

Where the numbers come from

  • Slope conversions: percent = rise ÷ run × 100 · angle = atan(rise ÷ run) · pitch = rise ÷ run × 12 · ratio 1 : (run ÷ rise)All the same slope written four ways. 1:12 = 8.33% = 4.76° = 1/12 pitch; 1:20 = 5%; 1:48 (ADA cross slope) = 2.08%.
  • ADA ramps (2010 Standards §405): Slope 1:12 max · rise 30" max per run · landings 60" long min · clear width 36" min · cross slope 1:48 max§405.2 slope, §405.6 rise, §405.7.3 landing length, §405.5 width, §405.3 cross slope. Anything steeper than 1:20 is a ramp (§106.5). Landings are also needed at the top and bottom, and where the ramp turns (60" × 60"). Handrails are required when the rise is over 6" (§405.8).
