Concrete fills the deck flutes only part way, so length × width × thickness over-orders. This works out the real volume from the deck profile.

Thin lines are the 6" wires, dark lines the sheet edges, blue the laps (two sheets on top of each other). The last sheet in each row is cut at the edge.

Where the numbers come from
- Vulcraft deck sizes: Composite 1.5VL, 1.5VLR, 2VLI, 3VLI · form deck 1.0C-36, 1.5C, 2C · dovetail 2.0D, 3.5DVulcraft Deck Solutions 2026 (LRFD), "Nominal Dimensions" drawing on each deck page.Source
- Canam deck sizes: Composite 1.5BL, LF2, LF3 · form deck P-3012US technical data sheets (LRFD/ASD), "Dimensions" drawing. P-3012: https://www.canam.com/en/product/form-deck/. P-3012's flute bottom isn't printed; 1" matches Canam's dead-load table. Other makers (New Millennium, ASC, Verco…) sell similar 1-1/2", 2" and 3" decks — pick Custom and type the sizes off your submittal.Source
- Concrete volume on deck: Average depth = cover above deck + deck depth × (flute top + flute bottom) ÷ 2 ÷ rib spacingMatches Vulcraft's "Theoretical Concrete Volume" tables exactly (e.g. 3VLI at 5" total = 1.08 yd³/100 ft², 2.0D at 4" = 1.12, 3.5D at 5-1/2" = 1.44), and lands 0–1.5% above Canam's deck + concrete weights, because Canam also takes out the steel's own thickness. Like Vulcraft, this leaves out the steel thickness (under 1.5%, on the safe side) and the extra concrete when the deck sags under the wet pour — cover that in waste. Vulcraft's 2026 1.5VLR volume table repeats the 1.5VL numbers; its concrete + deck weight column (37.5 psf at 3-1/2") agrees with this formula (0.92 yd³/100 ft²) instead.Source
- Cross-check: SDI and other makers: SDI 3x12 deck: 6" = 1.39, 6-1/2" = 1.54, 7-1/2" = 1.85 yd³/100 SF · 2x12: 4-1/2" = 1.08Steel Deck Institute, Weights and Volumes of Steel and Concrete (2026), Tables 2A/2B; same values as Vulcraft. ASC and New Millennium list the same 3" numbers; their 1-1/2" and 2" decks differ by up to 2% because the profiles differ — so pick your actual deck or type its sizes. None of them include extra concrete for deck deflection.Source
- Deck steel thickness: 22 ga 0.0295" · 20 ga 0.0358" · 19 ga 0.0418" · 18 ga 0.0474" · 16 ga 0.0598"Design base-metal thickness from the section-property tables. SDI uses the same values. Canam lists nominal 0.030", 0.036", 0.047", 0.060".Source
- Bagged concrete yield: 50 lb = 0.375 ft³ · 60 lb = 0.45 ft³ · 80 lb = 0.60 ft³QUIKRETE 5000 High Early Strength Concrete Mix data sheet, "Yield". Regular QUIKRETE Concrete Mix 1101 gives the same 0.45 and 0.60 ft³. All three are 0.0075 ft³ per lb, so a bag weight you type is figured at that rate (e.g. 40 lb = 0.30 ft³). High-yield mixes (e.g. Sakrete Maximizer, 0.92 ft³ per 80 lb) differ — check the bag.Source
- Weight of concrete: Normal weight 140 lb/ft³ · lightweight 110 lb/ft³Normal weight: QUIKRETE 5000 data sheet, Table 1 (approximately 140 lb/ft³; ready-mix is often 145–150). Lightweight: the 110 lb/ft³ Vulcraft uses in its deck-slab tables (Canam uses 115). Check your mix ticket.Source
- Cubic yard: 1 CY = 27 ft³ = 0.764555 m³Exact by definition: 1 ft = 0.3048 m.
- Welded wire mesh lap: 10 in by default (ACI minimum: one mesh square + 2 in = 8 in for 6×6 mesh) · sheets 5' × 10'ACI 318-19 §25.5.4 (plain welded wire in structural slabs) and ACI 439.5R-18 §6.4 both give one square plus 2 in, as summarized by ASCC (Jan 2021); 10 in is more than that minimum. 6×6-W1.4×W1.4 is the usual minimum temperature mesh on composite deck (SDI). Your engineer may call for a different lap — type it in. Sheets are counted laid the way that takes fewer, with no offcuts reused; counted by area, offcuts are assumed reused, so order extra.Source
