Use the SF printed on the box — it varies by product. Set underlayment to 0 if it's attached to the planks.

Where the numbers come from
- Boxes: Floor SF ÷ SF per box (from the box label), rounded up to whole boxesLaminate, vinyl plank, engineered and solid wood are all sold by the box, and the coverage printed on the box is the number to use — it varies by product. Cuts at walls, closets and doorways, and patterns like herringbone or diagonal, are not included: enter waste for those.
- Carpet: Strips = width across ÷ roll width, rounded up · carpet = strips × run length × roll width ÷ 9 = SYBroadloom comes off the roll in fixed widths (12' is the most common in homes; 13'6" and 15' also exist), so a room wider than the roll needs a second full-width strip and a seam — you pay for the whole strip even if part of it is cut off. The floor SY (SF ÷ 9) is shown for comparison. Pile direction, pattern match and closets can need more; the installer's seam plan is the final word.
