Coats400 SF per gallon is a typical interior paint at 4 mils wet. Use the number on your can — primers, rough or porous surfaces and deep colours cover less.

No waste is added unless you enter it. Walls and ceiling are rounded up to whole gallons separately (ceilings usually take a different paint).

- Wall area2 × (length + width) × height − openings2 × ( 12' 0" + 10' 0" ) × 8' 0" = 352.00 SF
- Wall paintarea × coats ÷ coverage, rounded up to whole gallons352.00 SF × 2 ÷ 400 SF/gal = 1.76 gal = 2
Where the numbers come from
- Coverage per gallon: 400 SF per gallon per coat (default) — 231 in³ ÷ 4 mils wet = 401 SFWorked out from the wet film thickness: a US gallon is 231 in³, so at 4.0 mils (0.004") wet it covers 231 ÷ 0.004 = 57,750 in² = 401 SF, and at 3.6 mils 446 SF. Benjamin Moore Regal Select Eggshell (N549) lists 400–450 SF per gallon at 3.6–4.0 mils wet and recommends two coats. Rough, porous or textured surfaces, primers and deep colours cover less — type the number on your can.Source
